CNNSI.com - 2002 MLB Post Season - World Series Archive
New York closed out the Series with a 3-2 victory last Saturday night over four-time Cy Young winner Greg Maddux, scoring all of its runs in the third inning when the master painter turned sloppy and left a few pitches too close to the center of the plate.
It ends with the Yankees, who trailed two games to none in the World Series, winning four consecutive games, in three of which they beat Cy Young Award winners (this season's probable winner, John Smoltz, included) and in the other they staged the second-greatest comeback in Series history.
The Series ended with Torre and pitcher David Cone dripping in champagne, chatting almost in a disbelieving hush at one side of a Yankees clubhouse as crowded and smelly as a subway car at rush hour.

Fielder was less effective after 1991, topping a.500 slugging average only once, in the strike shortened 1994 season, but he remained a serious power threat and one of the league's more exciting home run hitters through mid-1996, when he was traded to New York for pitching prospect Matt Drews.
His best season came in 1943, when he led the AL in home runs (34), RBI (118), and slugging average (.527), but the Tigers only finished 5th and York lost out in MVP voting to pitcher Spud Chandler (20-4, 1.64) of the pennant winning Yankees.
Their slugging averages are remarkably similar, and they walked about the same amount, York just a bit more.

 Strikeout changed Soriano's career
For New York, Rivera got good money after a monster 1996 season (2.09 ERA and 130 strikeouts in 107 2/3 innings), but the pay was much lower than what it would have been if the Yankees had waited to sign him once he bloomed as a closer.
At the end of this season, the Mariners might find it prudent to do what the Yankees did with Rivera -- give him a long-term contract, perhaps buying him out of free agency for a year.
Soriano's dramatic strikeout of Boston's Nomar Garciaparra in the eighth inning Aug. 17 brought an end to any thought of making him into a starting pitcher.
