John Patrick Hale: Define Historical Archaeology, Please
Archaeology’s role, then, is to explicate and explain that which came prior to the development of the discipline of anthropology, since the present is clearly the purview of cultural anthropologists.
According to James Deetz (1996), a popular definition of historical archaeology is, “The archaeology of the spread of European cultures throughout the world since the fifteenth century, and their impact on and interaction with the cultures of indigenous peoples” (5).
Historical archaeology — The study and interpretation of the material remains, both environmental and cultural, of societies in the remote and recent past, and the relationship between those remains and documentary history, towards a goal of understanding the society in its entirety including the cultural processes at work within and without the society.

SMU Department of Anthropology, MICHAEL A. ADLER
In 1996 the decision was made by the project director to surface scrape as much of the northeast quadrant of the site as possible during the early stages of the summer field work.
During the excavations, the northeast quadrant was identified as the grid southeast quadrant and the southwest quadrant as the grid northwest quadrant because the orientation was determined by the grid established for Room-block 6 by Anne Woosley in the early 1980s.
This was reversed in 1996 to reflect the standard practice in archaeology to number strata beginning at the modern ground surface and ending at the deepest stratum.

The University of Iowa Office of the State Archaeologist -- Iowa Archaeology Week 1996
The Office of the State Archaeologist sponsored Iowa Archaeology Week 1996 on September 14—22, with the assistance of the Iowa Archeological Society, the State Historical Society of Iowa, and dozens of county conservation boards, county historical societies, public libraries, museums, and state and national parks and preserves.
Archaeology reveals that early Iowans developed fascinating and sophisticated technologies, that they struggled with environmental challenges, and that they revered their dead—that they were really not very different from people today.
Iowa Archaeology Week is rapidly becoming an institution in the state, exemplified by the Iowa Humanities Board’s recognition of Iowa Archaeology Week 1995 as Outstanding Project in the Public Humanities.

 Archaeology
The archaeology subfield at CUNY maintains a dual focus: on major theoretical issues of wide concern in anthropology (rise of the state, hunter-gatherer organization, chieftainship, gender, human impacts); and on providing rigorous training in archaeological method (lithic technology, locational analyses, zooarchaeology, pottery analysis, quantitative methods).
While maintaining a strong scientific tradition and a solid basic training in environmental archaeology, the faculty have also been active in studies of perception, gender relations, political ecology, and the integration of historical documents and archaeology.
In recent years the archaeology subfield has developed particular strengths in the emerging area of Historical Ecology and the application of archaeological methods and data to aspects of Global Change research.
