The Sports Council was an independent body under the Department of the National Heritage, and was the predecessor body to the English Sports Council which came into being on 1st January 1997 and was rebranded as Sport England in March 1999..
The Sports Council operated six national sports centres, the most recent being the National Cycling Centre in Manchester which was opened in September 1994.
Sport England is currently implementing a radical modernisation programme and developing a new strategy for sport.
