Lazier has a winning track record at Lowe's Motor Speedway, he captured the checkered flag there in an IRL race in 1997, besting Billy Boat by 3.301 seconds in a Hemelgarn Racing entry.
Lazier's most impressive Motorsports accomplishment came in 1996 when he won the Indianapolis 500 in a Hemelgarn Racing entry, edging Davy Jones by.695 of a second.
Lazier's heroic underdog win came only two months after suffering significant back and pelvis injuries at Phoenix in an IRL car.

Lazier won his second IRL race in July 1997 at Charlotte Motor Speedway after a fierce fight with Billy Boat in which Buddy went into the dirt inside the kink on the main straight to take the lead.
His terrible practice crash at Phoenix International Raceway in March 1996 kept him from starting the next IRL event.
Buddy is the son of Bob Lazier who ran the 1981 "Indianapolis 500." I think the older Lazier was one of the better SCCA Formula Super Vee racers of that period.

6, 1996: Indy Racing League and Pikes Peak International Raceway officials announce that the newly built 1-mile oval in Fountain, Colo., would be host to an Indy Racing League event June 29, 1997, featuring the stars and cars of the Indianapolis 500.
Tony George, president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and founder of the IRL, made the announcement alongside C.C. Myers, PPIR owner and president.
He started from the pole, led 101 laps and won at Pikes Peak International Raceway the next race.

Target/Chip Ganassi racing has won the past four CART championships, with Vasser in 1996, Alex Zanardi in 1997 and 1998 and Montoya this past season.
