Elections in Canada - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Elections are generally held in either the fall or spring.
By-elections can be held between general elections when seats become vacant.
However, prior to 1997, elections averaged much longer: aside from the 47 day campaign in 1993, the shortest election period after World War II was 57 days and many were over 60 days in length.

Canada year book 1999 article: Government
Canadians have generally approved this course of action: in the June 1997 general election, the Liberal government, which had campaigned on the economic turnaround, was re-elected with a majority.
Elections in Canada usually occur every four to four and one-half years; the maximum duration of a parliament according to the Constitution is five years.
In the June 1997 election, for example, the Liberal Party took 51% of the seats with just 38% of the popular vote while the Progressive Conservatives took only 7% of the seats although they netted 19% of the popular vote.

Aside from the millions raised by political parties to fuel their campaigns, there's the cost of the electoral process and millions in reimbursements to parties and candidates — borne by the taxpayer.
Elections Canada estimates the cost for the 2004 election will be as much as $265 million — $65 million higher than last time around.
Inflation, population growth, the creation of seven new ridings, and increased reimbursements to candidates and payments to parties under new election financing laws are all being blamed for the higher cost.
