In an indoor track meet athletes contest the same events as an outdoor meet with the exception of the 100 m and 110 m/100 m hurdles (replaced by the 60 m sprint and 60 m hurdles at all levels), and the 10,000 m run and 3,000 m steeplechase.
Indoor meets also have the addition of a 3,000 m run (at both the collegiate and elite level).
On April 1, 1999 the IAAF moved the centre of gravity forward by 3 cm in order to ensure a greater number of legal throws and to allow for more accurate distance measurement.

She is coming off of a phenomenal 2003 indoor campaign, where she twice broke the American record in the 60m hurdles (best of 7.74 at the USA Indoor Championships semifinals) and won her first World Indoor title in the event.
The 1997 World Indoor 400m gold medalist, Miles-Clark is a two-time World Outdoors bronze medalist in the 400 ('95, '97), four-time U.S. 400-meter champion and three-time U.S. 800m champion.

The International Association of Athletics Federations World Indoor Championships were inaugurated as the World Indoor Games in 1985 in Paris, France and were subsequently renamed in 1987 as they are known today.
They have been held every two years except for when they were held in consecutive years 2003 and 2004 to facilitate the need for them to be held in alternate years to the main IAAF World Championships (outdoors) in the future.
In their short history the championships have seen Mozambique's Maria Mutola claim an incredible 6 gold medals in the women's 800 m from 1993 to 2004, her only defeat coming at the hands of Ludmila Formanová of the Czech Republic in 1999 in a championship record of 1 minute 56.9 seconds that still stands.

In an effort to embrace global athletics in 1987, the inaugural IAAF World Indoor Championships were held in America.
Ereng only entered the championships at the last minute and then waited to the bell before making his move from fifth to first to claim the first of two gold medals at the championships.
The final record was broken in the penultimate event in the championships when Russia's women successfully defended their 4x400m title with a time they again broke in 1999.

In college, she ran for Villanova where she won the NCAA Cross Country Championship in 1997, the NCAA Indoor Track 3000 in 1999 and 2000, and the NCAA Outdoor Track 3000 and 5000 in 1999, becoming the first female ever to do a double 3K and 5K win in NCAA history.
At the USA Indoor Championships, Carrie finished 2nd in the 3000m and was selected for the U.S. World Indoor team that would compete in Budapest.
In 2006, at the USA Cross Country Championships, Carrie won the 4k race and at the USA Indoor Championships, she won the 3000m in 9:05.80.

Favor Hamilton, competing in her first ever World Cross Country Championships, claimed fifth place in the Senior Women’s 4,000-meter race at the 30th IAAF World Cross Country Championships March in Dublin, Ireland.
She was ranked No. 6 in the world in the 1,500 and No. 1 in the U.S. last year after winning the 1,500 (4:06.93) at the Prefontaine Classic and placing second in the 1,500 (4:06.61) at the 2001 U.S. Outdoor Championships.
