Amalgam Comics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
Amalgam Comics was a metafictional American comic book publisher, and part of a collaboration between Marvel Comics and DC Comics, in which the two comic book publishers merged their characters to create new ones (e.g., DC Comics' Batman and Marvel's Wolverine became the Amalgam character Dark Claw).
These characters first appeared in a series of twelve comic books which were published in 1996, between issues 3 and 4 of the Marvel vs DC miniseries.
During the Amalgam Comics run, several metafictional comics and storylines were mentioned in relation to the Amalgam Comics characters, though they were never published as actual comics, they helped to give background knowledge of existing characters.

Part of the fact that comics have so little value in the mainstream society probably does attract a certain type that is not even going to consider going into film, for example.
As comics move forward, that's really the areas that can be pursued; not coming up with new gimmicks or clever characters, or not finding flashier ways to tell the story so much, as to try and actually infuse it with some content.
I felt like all those years of reading mainstream comics was still in there and there was no way to draw a punch without drawing on that source material.

They were created by one man, Sheldon Mayer, who also wrote and drew the comics for what was then called "National Periodical Publications" -- now DC Comics -- from 1956 to 1971 when they were published bi-monthly.
During his tenure as editor at DC Comics, he was also instrumental in giving a start to the characters Green Lantern, the Flash, Wildcat, Wonder Woman, and was credited with helping co-create the Justice Society of America with Gardner Fox; he also wrote many issues of Black Orchid.
The whimsical comic book managed to generate an amazing number of variations on the theme, thus earning real and lasting affection from its audience during its 15-year run.
