 Chemical Literature Course, Winter 1997 Schedule
The chemical literature is both vast and complex.
There is a copy of Maizell in the Ready Reference section next to the SEL Desk (Call number: QD 8.5.M34 1987), and of Wiggins and Ridley in the "Stack D" section behind the desk (Call number: QD 8.5.W54 1991 and Z 699.5.S3 R53 1996).

Trouble is, with no preface, introduction, nor acknowledgments (there is an index), the reader is left to wonder why many of these snippets are included, other than to support the personal social agendas of the editors.
With no explanation or rationale behind this mess, other than a paragraph obviously pasted at the end of an old 1997 presentation by one of the editors, a very sad mixed bag of articles are merely reprinted in this collection.
Each copied article includes a reprint permission statement, indicating where the articles were originally published or presented, and all were originally published in 1996 or 1997.

The major premise in this course is that literature is not text, but exists primarily in performance.
Our goal is literary and historical, that is, to find a way of understanding the performative impact of literature on an audience when we receive it only as text.
