The date of the Games' inception based on the count of years in Olympiads is reconstructed as 776 BC, although scholars' opinions diverge between dates as early as 884 BC and as late as 704 BC.
The so-called Intercalated Games (because of their off-year status, as 1906 is not divisible by four) were held in 1906 in Athens, as the first of an alternating series of Athens-held Olympics.
In 1998, it became known that several IOC members had taken bribes from the organising committee for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, in exchange for a vote on the city at the election of the host city.

The main focus for the games and the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies was the newly built National Stadium Bukit Jalil, a 100,000 spectator capacity stadium.
September 21st saw Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Head of the Commonwealth and Patron of the Commonwealth Games Federation declare the ceremony closed on a night that saw both international star Céline Dion and Rod Stewart entertain the crowd.

The Commonwealth Games finished recently, with South Africa ending in fifth place in the medal standings.
Medals were won for swimming, both track and field events, shooting, and gymnastics.
If there are fewer medals available to be won, then the fact that a team won fewer medals is certainly not a sign that they did worse.
