The Championships, Wimbledon, commonly refered as simply Wimbledon, is the oldest and, arguably, most prestigious event in the sport of tennis.
Wimbledon usually lasts for two weeks; the main events span both weeks, but the junior and invitational events are for the most part held during the second week.
Due to possibility of rain during Wimbledon, a retractable roof is planned for the court; it is expected to be completed in 2009.

On Thursday at the All England Club, in the semifinals of The Championships at Wimbledon, 27-year-old top-seeded # 1 Amelie Mauresmo of France (residence: Geneva, Switzerland), defeated 19-year-old 4th-seeded # 4 Maria Sharapova of Russia (residence: Bradenton, Florida) 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 (photo shown).
One loss was her retirement from this year's Aussie Open, the other was in the first Grand Slam final of Justine's career, the 2001 Wimbledon final, when then 19-year-old Justine was defeated by Venus Williams, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0.
The 2007 Championships will be played with no roof at all (the current partial roof removed), a new fixed partial roof will be in place in 2008, and the retractable roof completed in 2009.
