The 1998 Football World Cup was held in France, by the FIFA decision in July 1992 beating a bid by Morocco to host the event.
This was the first Cup title for France, who became the seventh world champions, the other six being Brazil, Uruguay, Italy, Germany, England and Argentina.
This World Cup tournament was the first one for the countries of Croatia, Jamaica, Japan, and South Africa.
