Part of the reason for the continuing popularity of travel by general aviation aircraft is the fact that these aircraft have access to approximately 5,500 airports in the United States, compared to the nearly 550 served by scheduled air carriers.
Partly because so many general aviation aircraft are based in the populous states of California, Florida, Texas and New Jersey, the list of top 20 airports by general aviation operations is dominated by airports located in those states.
For noncommercial aviation, there is a 17.5 cents per gallon excise tax on jet fuel and a 15 cents per gallon excise tax on aviation gasoline.

Formed in 1998 by avid aviation enthusiasts for the purpose of building an Aviation Welcome Center and Education Facility to the Sheboygan County Airport.
He is an aviation history buff, with his greatest interest in the 1930s and 40s focusing on military and the "Golden Age of Aviation." He had an interest in aviation as a very young boy, building airplane models, reading aviation books and immersing himself in aviation history.
He has a lifelong interest in airplanes and more recently "all things Aviation." Kyle completed his Private Pilot Training in August of 1993 and is currently a partner in a Beechcraft "Musketeer." He has been a member of the National EAA organization since 1987 and of the local EAA Chapter 766 since 1992.

Effective 0000UTC, November 5, 1998 the Aviation Routine Weather Report/Aviation Selected Special Weather (METAR/SPECI) code formats used in the United States of America (USA) for reporting ice pellets will change from "PE" to "PL." New USA observing policy/procedures will require that only "PL" be used to encode ice pellets starting November 5, 1998.
Furthermore, although the implementation on November 5, 1998 is planned to be a fully coordinated "turn-key" event, there may still be some observers who did not "get the word" and may incorrectly continue to use the obsolete "PE" code after 0000 UTC, November 5, 1998.
The ICAO Council in March 1998 adopted Amendment 71 to ICAO annex 3, Meteorological Service for International Air Navigation Standards, and recommended practices which detail the aviation requirements for meteorological services.
