Corruption scandal shakes Germany´s Christian Democrats
In Germany, the new millenium has been ushered in by a party financing and corruption scandal which was more exciting than many thrillers and caused a political earthquake of unprecedented dimensions.
The Christian Democratic Party (CDU) which until the end of 1999 appeared to be the most solid and united bourgeois party in Europe and given the difficulties for Schröder´s "red-green" coalition had appeared to be close to a return to power, suddenly saw its popular support shrink from day to day.
The scandal around Kohl and the CDU has meant a breathing space for the Social Democrats who shortly after their takeover of office in autumn 1998 had lost in virtually every regional election in 1999.

The CDU's published accounts show no trace of Mr Schreiber's million marks even though he said that he handed the briefcase containing the cash to Horst Weyrauch, an accountant and auditor who was close to Mr Kohl and who remains to this day a key figure in the management of the party's finances.

Deputy chairwoman of the CDU since 1991, she was subsequently federal Minister for Women and Youth (1991 to 1994) and of the Environment (1994 to 1998).
During the CDU crisis, she managed to ride the wave which buried most of the old party leadership and to outflank several (male) competitors.
By supporting Merkel, the CDU is seen as parting with its post-war tradition as the party of the widely, though not entirely, Catholic middle class, anchored in the Rhineland and southern Germany.
