In the 19 Japanese Grands Prix (1976-1977; 1987-2003), 11 have seen the title destiny decided (1976, 1987-1991, 1996, 1998-2000, and 2003), with 5 of those events (1976, 1996, 1998-1999 and 2003) being last race Championship deciders.
At the most recent Japanese Grand Prix, on October 12, 2003, Michael Schumacher endured one of the most trying races in his illustious career but managed to secure the point he needed to take his sixth World Championship, beating the record held by Juan Manuel Fangio.
The qualifying session for the 2004 Grand Prix, due to have been held on 9 October, was postponed until race day after a typhoon hit Suzuka.

Ferrari were excluded from the Malaysian Grand Prix after the barge boards -- fitted to improve air flow and stability -- were found to be one centimetre too short when the cars were inspected after the race won by Irvine.
The general view in the Grand Prix paddock was that Ferrari had made a basic mistake in running a car with bodywork that they were aware was outside the regulations, even though they said it offered them no performance advantage.
In another case after the Brazilian Grand Prix in 1995, teams running on an irregular fuel were punished by losing points won in the race, but their drivers were not sanctioned.

That cruising mode started in the first race of the season at the Australian Grand Prix in March when Irvine inherited his first Formula One victory after both Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher, in the other Ferrari, were knocked out of contention with technical problems.
At the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola, Irvine's car suffered its only breakdown this season and it was Schumacher who inherited the victory from Hakkinen, who drove his car off the track into a wall while leading the race.
The Monaco Grand Prix was the high point of the season for Ferrari when Schumacher and Irvine came in first and second, and the team led the constructors' championship 44 points to 20 over McLaren.
