No matter that it is around 80 kilometres away from the Principality of San Marino, Imola is close enough to Ferrari's home stamping ground, being barely 30 kilometres from Bologna and as such has close links with Maranello.
Pressure from Ferrari and their adoring fans added weight to the cause for a second Grand Prix for Italy and with the reinstatement of Monza in 1981, Imola succeeded in adopting San Marino to gain official recognition and a place in the Formula One calendar.
The largest entry for the San Marino Grand Prix was in 1989, when 39 drivers took part in practice, of whom 26 qualified to race, and the smallest field of 14 cars appeared in 1982, at the height of a FISA/FOCA dispute concerning alleged rule changing.

The first race to be given the "Grand Prix" title was the Grand Pride l'Automobile Club de France held at Le Mans in 1906.
Since then, it became prohibited to use the Grand Prix title for an event which did not count towards this Championship, except in the rare case of historic justification, such as the Grand Prix de Pau, which is currently a Formula 3000 event.
He won his first Grand Prix in the European GP at Jerez 1997, and went on to win World Championships in both 1998 and 99.

Having said that at the end of the first day of the previous two Grand Prix weekends this season it has looked like going the same way but on both occasions the silver wipe-out has failed to materialise.
With David Coulthard not managing to finish either race and Mika Hakkinen taking the Brazilian Grand Prix after a heart stopping moment when it looked like he would retire, nothing is too certain anymore.
McLaren's grip of Formula One is starting to look a little less firm after the third round of the FIA World Championship of 1999.
