Rail transport is an energy efficient means of mechanised land transport.
Rail lines that carry little traffic are often built with a single track used by trains in both directions; on rail lines like these, "crossovers", "passing loops" or "passing sidings", which consist of short stretches of double track, are provided along the line to allow trains to pass each other, and travel in opposite directions.
In the late 18th century iron rails began to appear: British civil engineer William Jessop designed edge rails to be used with flanged wheels for use on a scheme in Loughborough, Leicestershire in 1789 and subsequently opened an iron-works to produce more rails.

Article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
A sustainable transport policy should aim at modal substitution in long-distance intercity traffic movement in the country, where the rail and road modes are in competition.
The nature of the relative impact of rail and road transport suggests that a number of factors have to be given due consideration in the formulation of transport policy: category of traffic, type of traction on rail, type of passenger movement on road, and the trade-off between greater energy efficiency and greater environmental damage potential.
The national modal split between rail and road (in percentage terms) in 2000-01 is estimated at 26:74 for freight movement and 18:82 for passenger movement.

SSRN-Regulating Privatized Rail Transport by Javier Campos Méndez, Pedro Cantos Sánchez
With the rail industry transformed worldwide, regulation of the sector should remain simple and flexible to protect its share of transportation markets.
Apart from providing a stable legal and institutional framework and fostering competition and market mechanisms, regulators should refrain from intervening in the market-unless the goal of economic efficiency (subject to the socially demanded level of equity) is in jeopardy.
Then the rail industry was deeply restructured worldwide to halt erosion of the sector's share of transportation markets.
