 1st Airborne Battle Group History
As a PENTOMIC unit, meaning five sided, the 506th was one of five basic Airborne Infantry units of the 101st Airborne Division, smaller in size than the old regiment, but larger than a battalion, retaining many of the features found in both former units.
The 1st Airborne Battle Group 506th Infantry was reorganized on 3 February 1964, forming the 1st Battalion (Airborne) and the 2nd Battalion (Airborne) 506th Infantry.
With the creation of these two Battalions, the fine and exemplary traditions of the 506th Parachute Infantry, gained in both peace and war, were to be carried forward by a new generation of Currahees, many who were not yet born when the 506th made their drop in Normandy and their stand at Bastogne.
