  Lieutenant Joe Hardy
He joined the 1st Border in 1933 and qualified as a signaller, which proved to be his occupation for most of his military career.
Lieutenant HARDY immediately assumed duties as Second in Command of the Company, and under intense mortar and machine-gun fire he toured the Company area encouraging the men to greater efforts.
On the night of the withdrawal, Lieutenant Hardy was at Divisional HQ and ordered to set free the last of the carrier pigeons which had been brought in with the Division.

In the Royal Navy, the rank of Lieutenant is equivalent to that of a Captain in the army, and First Lieutenant is a position rather than a rank.
In the United States Navy, First Lieutenant is a position title and is held by the officer in command of the Deck department.
On larger vessels, the position is held by a Lieutenant or, in the case of extremely large warships such as aircraft carriers, a Lieutenant Commander or even full Commander.

 Anglo-Allied Army in Flanders and France - 1815
Brevet Colonel Freiherr von Ompteda was killed at Waterloo and replaced by Lieutenant Colonel Louis von dem Bussche, 1st Light Battalion On 24 August, the Brigade was amalgamated with the 1st Brigade KGL and remained in the 3rd Division.
Lieutenant General Lord Uxbridge was wounded at Waterloo and succeeded in command by Major General Vandeleur.  Major General von Alten was not at Waterloo.  On 11 July, Lieutenant General Sir Stapleton Cotton, 1st Baron Combermere was appointed to the  command.
By 21 June, Lieutenant General Sir Karl von Alten was appointed to the commandLieutenant General von der Decken returned to Hanover, mainly due to the fact that he was senior in army rank to von Alten and to many of the division commanders with the army.

Lieutenants Hambleton and Buckley destroyed a Pfalz near Jaulny (unconfirmed) and in the engagement Lieutenant Wilfred V. Casgrain while diving after an Albatros stripped the fabric from his wings and was forced to retire from the combat.
Lieutenant Lawrence was instantly killed in the crash and his body thrown clear of the airplane which was destroyed by fire.
Lieutenant Brotherton flew through a long anti-aircraft barrage until he struck a small river which he followed south until be sighted a small city where he attempted to make a landing.

The 1st Virginia State Line was organized with ten companies in the latter part of 1862.
Lieutenant Colonel Henry M. Beckley and two captains of the 1st Virginia State Line had previously served in the 36th Virginia Infantry, as had Major James A. Nighbert.

It is with deepest sympathy that The California National Guard announces the death of First Lieutenant Andre Tyson, age 33, on 22 June 2004.
Lieutenant Tyson died as a result of wounds received during an ambush while on patrol in Balad, Iraq.

In the same year, bars of captains and lieutenants changed from gold to silver to correspond with insignia of seniors.

Those not captured went to Nashville, Tenn., and there were attached to Company "K," 1st Kentucky Cavary, commanded by Captain James K. Huey, and served with that company and regiment till their term of enlistment expired, which was for one year, when they were mustered out of service.
At the expiration of the year for which they had enlisted, several of the men were unwilling to serve in the infantry and declined to re-enlist, but most of them did re-enlist to serve during the war.

 Medal of Honor- Robert T. Waugh
Directing his men to deliver fire on six bunkers guarding this hill, Lieutenant Waugh advanced alone against them, reached the first bunker, threw phosphorus grenades into it and, as the enemy defenders emerged, killed them with a burst from his tommy gun.
The fearless actions of Lieutenant Waugh broke the Gustav Line at that point, neutralized six bunkers and two pill boxes, and he was personally responsible for the death of 30 of the enemy and the capture of 25 others.
A promotion to 1st lieutenant was followed by the posthumous award of the Congressional Medal of Honor on October 4, 1944.

All officers of the 147th Aero Squadron, except Captain Douglas E. Edwards, Medical Corps, 1st Lieutenant Gorman, Commanding, and 1st Lieutenant Horace A. Andrews, transferred to the Service of Supply and squadron entrained at Colombey-les-Belles for Brest, France.
All units of the 3rd Army having been sent to either Weissenthrun, Germany, or to Colombey-les-Belles, France, all unit equipment was turned in to the Second Air Park for reclamation and shipment to America.

However, on May 1, 1863, 1st Lieutenant Nelson was appointed as the the 15th's Acting Adjutant, a position he was shortly thereafter commissioned in by the Governor of Wisconsin.
Lieutenant Tandberg is not believed to have been present at the daring early morning crossing of the Tennessee River on August 28th, which the 15th led.
After being wounded Captain Gasman and 1st Lieutenant Tandberg were removed to a Federal Army hospital, leaving Company D in command of 2nd Lieutenant Tufte for the second day of the battle, and for some time afterward.

The remains of three American servicemen previously unaccounted-for from Southeast Asia have been identified and were returned to their families for burial in the United States.
