  1st Marine Expeditionary Force - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 1st Marine Expeditionary Force is a Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) of the United States Marine Corps primarily composed of the 1st Marine Division, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, and 1st Marine Logistics Group.
Among Marines, it is common to pronounce I MEF as "eye mef", "first mef", or "one mef".
Deploy and employ expeditionary ready, air-ground task forces in response to Component Commander taskings to operate in Joint/Combined Operations, to conduct small scale contingencies and win in combat.

I MEF was activated on 8 November 1969 at Okinawa Japan as the I Marine Amphibious Force.
During the Operation Desert Storm, the 1st and 2d Marine Divisions, the ground maneuver elements of the First Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF), were positioned along the northern boundary of Saudi Arabia with the mission to attack north into Kuwait.
The 1st Marine Division was made up of units from the 1st Marine, 3d Marine, 7th Marine, and 11th Marine regiments (as well as units of other Marine regiments assigned to the 1st Marine Division).

WASHINGTON, April 30, 2004 — The 1st Marine Expeditionary Force is putting together the first battalion of a new Iraqi brigade being formed to restore and maintain order in the western city of Fallujah, a coalition military spokesman announced at a Baghdad news conference today.
Marines will continue to maintain a strong presence in and around Fallujah, Kimmitt said, until the new unit has demonstrated it can man designated checkpoints and positions.
Iraqi security forces will work inside Fallujah as order is restored to help police in their investigations to identify those responsible for the March 31 killing and mutilation of four American contractors and the Feb. 14 attack on Fallujah's police station, the general said.

Spokesmen at 1st Marine Expeditionary Force headquarters in Camp Pendleton, Calif., confirmed that an order to deploy "elements" of the big force was received this week, but would not say how many or exactly when and where they would go.
Several hundred Marines from Pendleton and#8211; part of the command element for the expeditionary force and#8211; are already in Kuwait, arriving in November for last month's Internal Look exercise and to help plan for possible action against Iraq.
The primary striking power of the expeditionary force is the 1st Marine Division, which has infantry and armored units, along with artillery and support troops.
