When Did the New Millennium Begin?
Most experts in calendrical matters will answer that the new millennium begins on the 1st of January in the year 2001, despite the fact that this answer is not the one that most people would like to hear (because, despite what the experts say, they intend to celebrate the new millennium on 1st January 2000).
The word "millennium" means "a period of 1000 years" so we can conclude that the period from 1 A.D. through 1000 A.D. (including both years) constituted one millennium, and in fact, the first millennium of the Christian era.
Strictly speaking, there is no first millennium in the astronomical system, since it simply numbers years by mapping them onto the sequence..., -2, -1, 0, 1, 2,..., and we are free to begin millennia where we think fit.

January 1 2001, is the first day of the third millennium!
This page is dedicated to spreading the news that the year 2000 is the last year of the current millennium, not the start of the next millennium.
If the general public wants to believe that 1/1/2000 is the beginning of the new millennium, then I will accept that, as the calendar is the vehicle of the public's perception of the numbering of days, and if its evolution includes starting the new millennium next year, than so be it.
A while back, the magazine "Skeptical Inquirer" had an article about the coming new millennium, and that those of us that are harping on the fact that January 1st, 2001 is actually the start of the next millennium are being too pedantic.

When the A.D. thing was decided, early in the first millennium, the years before Christ were counted backwards, and ended at the year 1 B.C. After that, the year 1 A.D. started.
So the 1st century was year 1 (A.D.) to year 100 (A.D.) The 2nd century started at 101 and ended at year 200.

The difference between the Millennium and year 2000 [Free Republic]
Short explanation The 3rd Millennium starts January 1st, year 2001 NOT year 2000 as many people believe, when using the Gregorian calendar.
The notion that the millennium does not end until next year ignores modern developments in time representation.
The first millennium is thus 0-999 and the second, which ends today, is 1000-1999.

There are valid arguments for the new millennium beginning on January 1, 2000 but they also apply to any date in time which trivializes the argument.
