  Association for Heritage Interpretation
At Willow Road, completed in 1939, he built three dwellings (of which No. 2 is the central) appearing as one, visually unified by the strong horizontal lines, pared down architectural detail and features such as his "photobolic screen" (a band of glazing allowing natural light to penetrate the centre of the plan).
2 Willow Road, is different in being the National Trust's example of Modern architecture, and a case study in the avant garde; standing in its relatively unaltered state as a microcosm of 1930's modernism and of the Hampstead "scene" of that time.
However new to the visiting public No. 2 Willow Road may be, by opening under the auspices of the National Trust, and using standard interpretive methods effectively, it has already effected a crack in the "historic house" mould: and encourages deconstruction of the stereotyped definition.

2 Willow Road - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
2 Willow Road is part of a terrace of three houses in Hampstead, London designed by architect Ernő Goldfinger and built in 1938.
A number of cottages were demolished to allow for the construction, which was strongly opposed by a number of local residents including novelist Ian Fleming (this was said to be his inspiration for the name of the James Bond villain Auric Goldfinger) and the future Conservative Home Secretary Henry Brooke.
2, which Goldfinger designed specifically as his own family home, is the largest of the three houses and features a spiral staircase designed by Danish engineer Ove Arup at its core.

Goldfinger conceived the design for 1-3 Willow Road as both a functional home for his growing family and as an opportunity to explore his talents as an architect.
The site was formerly occupied by four small cottages, facing a triangle of north-facing open land, and was perfect for reflecting Goldfinger's ideas for giving his buildings a sense of light and space.
The double-height studio was abandoned in favour of a change in floor level to correspond with the various functions of the house.

While Willow Road established Goldfinger as an important figure in the Modern movement in London, and his office building on Albemarle St, built in 1953-58, continued that early tradition, he is better known for several very large Modernist/Brutalist high-rise buildings built in the 1970’s, most notably, the Trellick Apartments of 1972.
Willow Road was influential as a prototype of a modern version of the London terraced type and was an important source for certain later projects, especially the housing designed in the 1960’s and 70’s by Camden Borough Architect’s office, projects like Fleet Road, Alexandra Road, and Mansfield Road.
