20 Million Miles to Earth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
20 Million Miles to Earth is an 82-minute 1957 fl and white science fiction film scripted by Bob Williams and Christopher Knopf from an original treatment by Charlott Knight.
This film starred William Hopper as a U.S. Army colonel, Joan Taylor as a scientist's daughter, Frank Puglia as her father, and featured Thomas Brown Henry and John Zaremba as another military officer and scientist, respectively.
The surviving crewman is rescued by some fishermen and taken to the local hotel, where a visiting American scientist's daughter, formerly an Army nurse, tries to tend to him.

It is ironic that while governments around the world did their utmost to keep their results and data of the experiments classified, the public did see some of the aspects and consequences of genetic engineering, as well as of nuclear and biological accidents in the most unlikely place - a movie theater.
The monster, Ymir - the Venusian creature that escapes only to wreak havoc on Earth is perhaps one of his most beloved creations by fans - and is, most likely because of it's popularity one of the figurines that Columbia is going to issue as part of a very limited DVD Boxed set in Japan.
20 Million Miles To Earth is improved in gray scale - but is elevated in sharpness (to counter the effect of reducing the size of the image, whereby it grows softer) which leads to blooming of the edges, especially in the most luminescent areas of the frame.

It was especially cool to see Denis Muren show a model of The Ymir and The Beast From 20000 Fathoms fighting which he had made when he was just 11 or 12—also to see Dan Taylor proudly display an autographed photo of the famous Cyclops from THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD.
The film itself opens with narration about how man has advanced to the point that he has now moved to the stars and has now journeyed "20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH!" The opening credits are shown first over a mysterious clouded planet which dissolves to just clouds over the Earth when the actors names appear.
20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH uses a common approach seen in 1950s science fiction films (QUATERMASS 2 comes to mind)—filming nighttime scenes during the day and using a shadowy and shaded effect to try and fool an audience into believing it is indeed the evening or the night.

20 Million Miles to Earth wasn't by any means a significant boost in the development of genre movies, though it did help push the evolution of Harryhausen's techniques and artistry.
It was his final fl-and-white film before graduating to the color classics that are his most famous — Jason and the Argonauts, The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, and First Men in the Moon.

This would be Harryhausen's final fl & white picture and after 20 Million Miles to Earth, he lent his talents to the incredible Sinbad series, quite a change of pace.
As usual, Harryhausen's creations are the main reason to visit the picture, with the Ymir being one of his greatest accomplishments, if you ask me. While not always as sympathetic as some classic movie monsters, the Ymir has its moments and if nothing else, has ample personality and is a testament to Harryhausen's skills.

In other words, there are few American special effects or animation artists alive who have the kind of name recognition that belongs to Oscar-winner Ray Harryhausen, whose stop-motion, rear-projection ("Dynamation") style revolutionized the industry and influenced countless generations of visual artists, including George Lucas and Henry Selick.
In fact, the only real knock on 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957) is one that dogged Harryhausen throughout his career: his creations are more animate and sometimes infinitely more interesting than the real actors they either terrorized or worked alongside.
But whether you're picking up 20 Million Miles to Earth for the film itself or the peripheral materials, it is nevertheless an invaluable DVD for film historians, visual effects aficionados and practitioners, and sci-fi buffs looking to pad their knowledge of cinema.

Not too dissimilar from his score for Earth vs the Flying Saucers, it is portentously dramatic when it needs to be, and it fills in the gaps in the action nicely.
