  JETHRO TULL
Jethro Tull’s first three albums are comfortably eclectic, but perhaps not as well played as they once seemed.
On 1971’s Aqualung, Jethro Tull leader Ian Anderson succumbed to the idiosyncratic artistic/biological destiny that would set him and his band apart from less ambitious musicians.
It's admirable that Tull goes to so mucy effort to make is instrumental backing so unique; he often gets the music organized well before the words are written.

Jethro Tull (agriculturist) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jethro Tull (born 1674 in Basildon, Berkshire; died 21 February 1741 in Shalbourne, Berkshire) was an English agricultural pioneer during the Industrial Revolution, and the Agricultural Revolution.
Tull advocated using horses instead of oxen, invented a horse-drawn hoe for clearing weeds, and made changes to the design of the plough which are still visible in modern versions.
Jethro Tull died in 1741 and is buried in the churchyard of St Bartholomew's church, Lower Basildon in Berkshire.

Jethro Tull (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jethro Tull is a progressive rock band that formed in Blackpool, England in the 1960s.
Vettese was later regarded by Tull fans as the one who had the heaviest electronic and pop influence on the group's music and Anderson's new arrangement ideas, and made responsible for the 1983–1984 period often referred to as the worst, both commercially and musically.
It is still known as the worst Tull studio album; however, Martin Barre claims, that it is his favourite, and many critics say that, having the real drummer on it, it could have been the "classic" effort of the 1980s classic rock genre, together with Genesis' eponymous Genesis album and Yes's 90125 hit record.

Crest of a Knave - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Crest of a Knave is an album by the British progressive rock group Jethro Tull, released in 1987.
Peter-John Vettese was now absent (Anderson contributed the synth programming) and the album relied more heavily on Barre's electric guitar than the band had since the early 1970s; the album was a critical and commercial success.
The award was particularly controversial as many did not consider Jethro Tull hard rock, much less heavy metal.

 CNN.com - Jethro Tull: Still loving the job - June 19, 2002
More than 20 years past the band's commercial heyday, co-founder Ian Anderson, 54, looks more like a crazed pirate than a crazed minstrel -- his head is wrapped in a bandanna -- but prowls the stage with his characteristic swagger, still often perched on a single leg.
Tull classics like "Benefit," "Aqualung," "Thick as a Brick," and "Living in the Past" are staples in the racks at music stores.
For the summer of 2002, Tull is releasing a CD and DVD, both called "Living with the Past," and is on a 60-concert U.S. tour.

 Rock Music: Jethro Tull
Unfortunately, I missed their heyday by about 12 years, and was a bit disappointed when I saw them in concert in New Orleans in 1989, but they've left one of the more impressive legacies of recorded rock music.
Tull originally emerged from the blues-rock scene in England, and were famously bad for several years.
Tull fans of the day were in for a real treat with this double album: Rather than containing new material, Living contained many singles previously not available on album, such as "Sweet Dream", "Witches Promise", "Life Is A Long Song", and of course the title track.

In many ways, Tull was the most consistent group of the progressive era, releasing an album every year between 1968 and 1980, with six to seven of them remaining progressive rock classics.
In their heyday, Tull were able to easily weather line-up changes, critical snubbing and touring catastrophes with nary a stumble, thanks in large part to Anderson's indomitable vision.
Tull concerts are an annual event for me since I got into the band, and even with a few duds here and there, I can't think of another band with as many great albums as Jethro Tull.

But the venerable leader of rock's legendary Jethro Tull says that's exactly what he felt he had to do a few years ago and on up to this week's release of the group's 28th album, "Roots to Branches" (Chrysalis/EMI).
"I quite enjoyed playing the flute on the Jethro Tull album, feeling that it was a much more integral part of the music than it usually is," Anderson said.
The result - like it or not for some Tull fans - is one of the group's most focused albums, brimming with songs of considerable depth.

Through the years, the band's sound evolved to encompass far more: After three albums they became a duo and esentially did away with vocals, and released another string of four albums for the Island label that are monuments of inventiveness, although seldom fully appreciated by those who cut their teeth on the first three.
Jethro Tull are very well known and perhaps as a result of this many people have misconceptions of the band, their ideas about the band being dominated by the image of Anderson as frenetic flute-playing court jester rather than any notion of what the music is like.

As much as I despise hardcore Tull fans - my experience has led me to the sad conviction that Jethro Tull tends to attract the kind of people that were rabid Hitler lovers in their previous incarnation - I have to admit one thing: Jethro Tull are really like no-one else.
In the beginning Jethro Tull were just a normal blues band, primarily because prog rock still didn't exist in 1968 - they had yet to invent it (well, actually, it was already in the process of being invented by the Nice, but it was still kinda underground).

Jethro Tull: The Jethro Tull Christmas Album
The Jethro Tull Christmas Album is a tasteful 16-track collection with a few brand new nuggets, revisited holiday-flavored Tullian treats from the past, and a handful of traditional Christmas hymns to keep the festivities flowing.
Such were the days when Tull were awash in mandolins, acoustic guitars, flutes and accordions.
In the spirit of spending the holidays with family, the core Tull line-up (Anderson, Barre, keyboardist Andrew Giddings, drummer Doane Perry and bassist Jonathan Noyce) is joined by former bassist Dave Pegg, who strums a little mandolin, and drummer James Duncan, who happens to be Anderson's son.

 SIXTIES - Jethro Tull

Musically, Tull veers away from the grandiosity of Thick, Warchild, and Too Young, and more towards a song cycle inspired by old English folk but full of sharp rock riffs and amazing melodic vocal choruses.
I have played the CD numerous times since purchasing and it is as great as I remembered it to be 20 years ago.
