  20 Gauge
With 7/8 ounce loads the recoil of a 20 gauge gun is noticeably less than that of 16 and 12 gauge guns of similar weight, which ordinarily shoot at least 1 ounce of shot.
20 gauge shells are available with most shot sizes up to steel #2 or lead #4, which is probably the largest size practical for the bore, even in the 3" magnum shell.
The 20 gauge rifled slug of the traditional Foster type weighs 3/4 ounce (Winchester) or 5/8 ounce (Federal and Remington) at a MV of 1600 fps.

Gauge (bore diameter) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gauge or bore (especially in British English) of a shotgun is the diameter (caliber) of the barrel.
The gauge or bore is determined by the number of solid spheres of a diameter equal to the inside diameter of the barrel that could be made from a pound of lead.
The term related to the measurement of fl powder cannon, which were also measured by the weight of their round iron shot; a 6 pounder, for example, would fire a 6 pound (2.7 kg) spherical cast iron ball, which gave a bore diameter of about 3.6 inches (9.1 cm).

20-gauge shotgun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A 20 Ga shotgun is sometimes considered more suitable for hunting due to the fact that it destroys less of a game animal's meat.
In addition, a 20 Ga shotgun has less recoil than a 10, 12 or 16 Ga versions do, and may be more desirable to those who need to consider their shoulder joints.
A 20 Ga shotgun also is appropriate for younger shooters who may have a difficult time firing a larger shotgun in the field due to the recoil.

Is a 20-Gauge Enough for Deer? (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.cs.unc.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
A twenty gauge slug is plenty big enough to bring down deer; in fact?here in the woods of Maine?I prefer a slug gun over a rifle, and I prefer a twenty over a twelve: firepower is a matter of gray matter just as much as it's a measure of gun powder.
A 20 is plenty big enough, last season my cousin took an 11 point buck that scored 155, with his single shot 20, the deer fell on impact, regained his footing and didnt travel more than 25 yards before going down for good.
A 20 gauge with remington sluggers or winchester super x shells is plenty to kill a deer with.

IMO, a 20 gauge repeater loaded with the Rottweil Brennekes and with a cool hand directing same would be good for taking, say,250 lb eating pigs.

 View topic - 7/8 ounce loads - 12 and 20 gauge ..
Assuming equal loading parameters between the two gauges (or nearly so) is it possible to have a 'quasi' 20 gauge by using 7/8's ounce loads in a 12 gauge gun.
The 12 gauge shooting the 7/8 oz load, all other things being equal, should pattern a little better than the 20 gauge shooting the 7/8 oz load.
To try and remove as many variables as possible, I loaded both the 12 gauge and 20 gauge to the same velocity although, not surprisingly, the 20 gauge peak pressure was higher and, of course, I had to use a different mix of propellant and wad.

 20 Gauge Shells
I know there is a safety issue with mixing 12 gauge and 20 gauge shells up and I have seen 12/10/28 gauge in all colours of the rainbow but 20 gauge always seems to be yellow.
The only exception to this is I have recently received a large amount of old shotgun ammo and ther is a box of Imperial 20 gauge that is orange in colour.
The 20 could be put in a 12, and would slip down into the forcing cone and hang up there.

 Remington's 16-Gauge Model 870
Back then the 16 gauge was preferred for bobwhite quail in the South and almost on par with the 20 gauge nationally for most upland shooting.
It was considered the optimum gauge available in fast-pointing, quick-handling guns for grouse, woodcock, and quail hunting with a payload substantial enough to deal with pheasants when required.
The 16 gauge has a bore diameter of.662 inch so by the square--load theory a one-ounce load should be the ideal performer.

Chamber Mates Sub Gauge Shotgun Chamber inserts Patterns & Velocity
The patterns were analyzed by drawing both a 20 inch and a 30 inch circle centered around the densest area of the pattern.
We cut open 5 of each type of shell we were using and counted the actual number of pellets to get the true average number of pellets in a given load and used that number as a basis for determining the actual percentages of the load that hit within the circles.
Patterns were shot and chronographed thru all of the different gauges of inserts and all of the different gauges of actual small gauge guns at distances of 20, 30, and 40 yards.

The 16 Gauge: Could it be the Best Compromise?
The lack of a 16 gauge skeet class certainly hurt (that has helped keep the 28 gauge going), the 3" 20 gauge shells (coupled with the lack of a 3" 16 gauge shell), and the no-tox shot trend as a pricey bonus.
At one time It was touted as combining "the power of a 12 gauge with the handling of a 20." That isn't too far off the mark, and with 3" shells it would be right on target.
A 16 gauge gun should be built on a 16 gauge size frame, not crammed into a 12 gauge frame, as is so often the case.

Brezny acknowledged that until a few years ago, he “would have laughed at the idea” of using a 20 gauge to hunt ringneck roosters.
Brezny said the lighter weight of the 20 gauge also can be attractive to young hunters as well as seniors or outdoors enthusiasts who may be less physically fit.
“The average 20 gauge, as opposed to the average 12 gauge, is easier to carry, quicker to shoulder and faster to point,” he said.
