The 2000 al-Qaeda Summit was a meeting of several high-level al-Qaeda members held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The meeting was held in the hotel room of Yazid Sufaat, a former army captain and businessman, in a hotel in Kuala Lumpur.
The summit's purpose was allegedly to plan future terrorist attacks, which apparently included the October 2000 bombing of the USS Cole and the 9/11 plot.

So, you issue a statement that you loathe Saddam and want him gone figuring that, if the Americans go ahead and invade and oust Saddam, you have hedged your bets and can claim to the Iraqi people to be on their side in hopes of having enough Iraqis to rise up against the American occupiers.

If the administration had serious, credible evidence of ties between Iraq and Al Qaeda, they would be, at a minimum, talking it up.
We probably have more resources devoted to Al Qaeda, Syria and North Korea and Iran, than to finding proof for a case that is essentially - for all intents and purposes - closed.

That''s the analogy to me of this Iraqi-al Qaeda connection: could be a smoking gun, or a red herring.
I''m going to go out on a limb here and say that if we knew that this guy was meeting with Al Qaeda, so did Saddam, who was incredibly paranoid and known for keeping police-state level tabs on his people.

The FBI and the 9/11 Commission report say that al-Hazmi and al-Mihdhar first entered the United States in 2000, but the Washington Post and the LA Times report that the two first came in 1999, and that al-Hazmi’s name was on their future apartment’s lease in November of 1999.
