The Australian: Expatriate umpire riled touring Aussies [December 08, 2004]
Although he was never to appear in Test cricket, he became the last player to score 3000 runs in an English season, in 1961, and the following year nearly completed the double of 2000 runs and 100 wickets with his slow medium pace.
He had to contend with a number of setbacks and tragedies, including the death of his first wife in childbirth and the death of a son, whom he had not seen between the ages of three and six on account of seeking work as a professional cricketer in England.
In a Test at Old Trafford in 1976 he was severely criticised for permitting too much short-pitched bowling from the West Indies to England batsmen Brian Close and John Edrich.

 CNNSI.com - Cricket - Hussain-Fletcher partnership key to English success - Sunday March 18, 2001 08:17 AM
They joined forces after the 1999 English season in which England was knocked out of the World Cup in the first round, then lost a test series to New Zealand.
However, since being beaten in the 1999-2000 test rubber in South Africa -- Fletcher's first assignment as coach -- England has won four consecutive test series: Zimbabwe 1-0 and West Indies 3-1, both at home, Pakistan 1-0 last December and now Sri Lanka 2-1.
Consequently the players are enjoying each other's success, they are combining as an effective unit and the spirit in the side has increased immeasurably.
