Handbook of Texas Online: TEXAS RANGERS [BASEBALL CLUB]
The Rangers fell to fourth place in 2000, as they were unable to compensate for the loss of Gonzalez and pitcher Aaron Sele, who departed as free agents after the 1999 season, and All-Star catcher Ivan Rodriguez, who missed almost half the season with a broken finger.
The Rangers went on to finish first in their division in 1994, despite a losing record, but the mid-August strike by major league players canceled that year's postseason, and the team's first chance to reach the World Series ended prematurely.
The Texas Rangers, a professional baseball club, belong to the Western Division of the American League.

When Hicks, whose hobbies include owning the Texas Rangers, sat down with Rangers general manager Doug Melvin and Scott Boras, the agent for free agent shortstop Alex Rodriguez, last week in a suite at the Wyndham Anatole Hotel in Dallas, his mindset was the same as it was when the Shamrock deal nearly collapsed.
Something needs to be changed, but until it is changed, I have to do what is best for the Texas Rangers.
After suffering through a last-place season in 2000, during which Hicks and Melvin pared payroll to prepare for this season's free-agent market, Hicks wants to return to the postseason.

 Chad Allen BaseballLibrary.com
The son of former NFL defensive back Jackie Allen, Chad grew up a fan of the Texas Rangers and roomed with future major-league hurler Ryan Rupe at Texas A&M. A deep scar under his nose was caused by a football injury at the age of 13.
But Allen somehow failed to make the final cut in 2000 and spent most of the year in Triple-A. During his short stint in the majors, he annoyed manager Tom Kelly by not running out ground balls, and his defensive play was shaky at best.
Despite a disappointing season for Double-A New Britain in 1998, Allen made the Twins out of spring training in 1999 and was a pleasant surprise while filling in for the hobbled Marty Cordova in left field.
