The World Championships in Athletics is an event organized by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
The idea of having an Athletics World Championships was around well before the competitions first event in 1983.
Prior to the inaugral IAAF World Championships in Helsinki in 1983 there had been several single events and races in the years leading up to them which were considered World Championships in those events.

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) is the international governing body for the sport of athletics (known in the US as "track and field").
It was founded in 1912 at its first Congress in Stockholm, Sweden by representatives from 17 national athletics federations as the International Amateur Athletics Federation.
However, the IAAF retained the word "amateur" in its name until its 2001 Congress at which the IAAF's title was changed to its current form.

On July 21, 2002, at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Kingston, Jamaica, the US team of Ashton Collins, Wes Felix, Ivory Williams and Willie Hordge, ran 38.92 for the World Junior Record in the 4x100 meter relay.
South Carolina's Lashinda Demus ran a new World Junior record time of 54.85 on 31 May in Louisiana and is a clear favourite for the title.
With the right competition, she may well become the first athlete to break a world junior record at a World Junior Championship since Tereza Marinova in Sydney 1996 (14.62 in the triple jump).

When the championships are over the image of Jamaica should be such that people will come in their thousands to have a look and to spend some money.

On the first morning of the World Junior Athletics Championships in Santiago de Chile, Ireland's Emily Maher comfortably won heat one of the women's 100 metres in a time of 11.71 seconds.
There was an Irish junior record from Derval O'Rourke in the women's 100 metres hurdles when she finished third in her heat in a time of 13.61 seconds.
There was a huge shock in the event with the Sydney Olympic champion, Poland's Kamilla Skolimoska, finishing 20th and failing to qualify for the final.

Competing in South Africa, after the Australian season, Pittman equalled the world junior record for 400m hurdles and she later won the Olympic trial held at Stadium Australia, upsetting the favourite Lauren Poetschka.

Australian World Junior Team member Fabrice Lapierre (NSW) has claimed Australia's first medal of the IAAF World Junior Championships in Kingston, Jamaica, setting a personal best of 7.74 metres in the men's long jump to snatch the silver.
Lapierre was lying in eighth place leading into his last jump, and managed to perfom when it counted, pulling out a remarkable jump, putting him amongst the medals.
