The town gives the impression of newly overcome poverty: many of the houses are tiny (one door, one window), the streets are too narrow for their traffic, and the concrete sidewalks chipped and uneven -- but there is building, repair and extension everywhere, and the general mood seems to be one of great optimism.
Ireland is a magic country for traveling in so many ways: the people are almost invariably warm and friendly, the scenery is virtually always attractive and often great, and there are points of historic or prehistoric interest scattered all over the country, although in many places mostly as (usually very atmospheric) ruins.
Another group of birds that is strangely uncommon in summer Ireland, 'between migrations', is the shore birds; unexpected because with its heavily indented coast-line and almost half of the mostly boggy area covered by innumerable small loughs the landscape seems so suitable for them.

See, he got married on December 8, 2000, and since I couldn't really stay with his family (they had cats!), we used his new flat.
The flight home was uncomfortable (like a sardine can in coach again), but when the flight finally landed in Atlanta, it took me something like 30 minutes to get from deplaning through baggage claim and customs to the MARTA station to get home.
In Ireland, people were really rooting for the Bore to become president.

I also met some wonderful people from Ireland and elsewhere: poets, childrens' writers, sculptors, photographers, visual artists, screenwriters and lots more.
At the end of the time I'd finished a group of poems centred around landscape and memory that I hope will be a core part of my next collection.

The plan was to walk a couple of hours in the morning, stop at a convenient village for lunch and a beer, walk a few more hours and then find a village, dinner, beer and a BandB.
I studied the maps, found a route, (along a well-traveled road), plotted out our overnights, verified villages evenly distributed along the way, and even found that there were busses running along our route, in case we spent a little too much time pubbing one day.
Using the best technology available today (a twelve-parallel channel GPS with a map of Ireland to the Hiway-level), we immediately got lost, and spent about an hour, and three miles, getting back to where we wanted to START our day.
