Varuna is the custodian of the various demons of the ocean.
Varuna is often shown as a fair-skinned man who rides either a crocodile, or a monstrous fish named Makara which has an antelope's head and legs, or a chariot drawn by seven swans; he holds a serpent, a noose, a conch shell and a vessel of gems in each of his four hands.

Varuna and Mitra are the gods of the oath, often twinned or identified as Mitra-Varuna (a dvandva compound).
This may misrepresent the actual importance of Varuna in early Vedic society due to the focus of the Rigveda on fire and Soma ritual, Soma being closely associated with Indra; Varuna with his omniscience and omnipotence in the affairs of men has many aspects of a supreme deity.

Varuna compared to Eris, Pluto, 2005 FY Sedna, Orcus, Quaoar, and Earth.
At 43 AU and on a near-circular orbit, unlike Pluto which is in 2:3 orbital resonance with Neptune, Varuna is free from any significant perturbation from Neptune.
Varuna has a rotational period of approximately 3.17 hours (or 6.34 hours, depending on whether the light curve is single or double-peaked).

Varuna is classified as a classical trans-Neptunian object and follows a near-circular orbit with a semi-major axis of ~43 AU, similar to that of Quaoar but more inclined.
Interestingly, the orbits of Varuna and Pluto have similar inclination and are similarly oriented (the nodes of both orbits are quite close).

In an effort to independently determine both the size and albedo of Varuna, astronomers David Jewitt and Herve Aussel of the University of Hawaii and Aaron Evans of the State University of New York at Stony Brook simultaneously observed the KBO using two telescopes atop Mauna Kea, Hawaii.
One observed Varuna at visible wavelengths to record the amount of sunlight it reflected, while the other observed at submillimeter wavelengths -- a region of the electromagnetic spectrum beyond the infrared -- to measure the amount of flbody radiation the body emitted.
While Varuna is somewhat more reflective that earlier estimated, it is march darker than Charon, which has an albedo of over 30%, even though the two objects have similar sizes.

(20000) Varuna has equivalent circular diameter D = 900(+125/-145) km and red geometric albedo p = 0.070(+0.030/-0.017).
The surface is darker than Pluto, suggesting a composition largely devoid of fresh ice, but higher than the canonical albedo of 0.04 previously assumed for these bodies.
After we measured the size, we went back to measure the rotation period and shape of Varuna.

The large size, short period and elongated shape suggest that Varuna is rotationally distorted.
Given that water and denser, refractory materials must be present in cosmic proportions, this low bulk density requires an internal void space (porosity) of 10% to 30%.
Varuna may be a rotationally distorted rubble pile, with a weak and porous internal constitution due to fracturing by ancient impacts.

In Vedic religion, Varuna ("he who covers", referring to the sky) is one of the most important gods in the pantheon, and chief of the asuras.
Historical analysis of Indo-European linguistics suggests that his name is cognate with that of Uranos, the sky god in Greek mythology: both derive from a root meaning "to cover"

 20000 Varuna - Wikipedia

Quaoar is estimated to have a diameter of 1260 ± 190 km, which at the time of discovery in 2002 made it the largest object found in the solar system since the discovery of Pluto.
Quaoar is believed to be a mixture of rock and ice, like other Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs); however its very low albedo (estimated at 0.1, but still much higher than that of Varuna (0.04)) indicates that the ice has disappeared from Quaoars outer layers.
20000 Varuna and 28978 Ixion are also moderately red in the spectral class.

Hindu God Points Way To Planet X
Varuna was detected last November by Arizona-based astronomers in the Spacewatch Project, a scheme aimed at scouring the asteroid belts to look, in part, for rogue rocks that could be a potential threat to Earth.
In Varuna's case, the asteroid was easy to spot because it shone brightly, thanks to its reflective surface.
It could vindicate the US astronomer Clyde Tombaugh, who in 1930 found "Planet X," the long-suspected ninth planet of the Solar System, and named it Pluto, but continued his search of the outer solar system in the belief that other planets were still to be discovered, they said.
