  2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Revealing mistakes: As the PanAm shuttle closes in on the space station, the shuttle and station rotate synchronously, so you see the station stay still through the shuttle's windows.
This motive was always used not only to depict a trip in space and time, and beyond, but also had rich philosophic meaning.
It is not just an odyssey of a person; it is an odyssey of our species.

'2001: A Space Odyssey' - 'Thus Spake Zarathustra' - Crystalinks
The toss of the ape-man's bone is metaphoric for a lift-off from Earth toward the Moon, and for the tremendous technological advances that have occurred in the interim.
Images of the giant circular space station revolving and orbiting in space are accompanied by the lyrical 'Blue Danube Waltz' by Johann Strauss.
In the flness of space, the pilots of the Pan Am spaceship dock (or penetrate with) the phallic craft - through the aid of graphic read-out screens that must constantly be monitored - in the spoke-hub of the gigantic, circular, revolving space station - a symbol of an egg - almost like a copulatory act.

Slashdoc - 2001 A Space Odyssey Analysis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Since there was no great technology in 1968 and space travel was not as well defined as today, Kubrick stayed away from fantasy and focused more on reality of space travel, a scientific theme throughout the movie.
I find this to be relevant in “2001” as the time change only portrays a different time period but more or less the same content.
Finally, in “2001,” Kubrick only helps to see what the monolith really is and leaves it up to the imagination of the audience.

 2001 A Space Odyssey
Now we complain if a shootout or a chase doesn't happen in the first ten minutes - when 2001 was filmed it took at least half a hour for a movie to even get started.
At the time the space race was going hot and fast, and it was commonly expected that there would be a massive, permanent presence on the moon and in earth orbit well before the turn of the century.
It was a huge "wow", showing the glory of man as he expanded into space and got prepared for the stars.

2001: A Space Odyssey - FAQs   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Some people think "2001: A Space Odyssey" is all about food; others think it is a parable about evolution; others consider the monolith to be a religious icon.
I believe that most people for whom this film "clicks" are able to find it relevant in some way to their own lives or experience, and "internalise" a meaning even if it is impossible to explain to others (or even themselves).
2001 is that other people already do a good job of making them available, and my policy is not to duplicate other sources if at all possible (a principle not always followed by subsequent entrants into the 2001-on-the-Internet environment, unfortunately).

The story follows the same track as the movie, yet with inner dialogue of the apes on Earth and their first meeting with the Black Monolith, describing how the impact of this clean, smooth, fl mystery impacted their means of survival through the use of weaponry and tools.
Following some 2001 years later into deep space towards Jupiter we meet H.A.L., another enigma that similarly impacts man and his ability to control his fate or destiny.
It's not hard to see why--the movie is spacy, the special effects (especially the space warp sequence) are spacy, the space warp music by Giorgi Ligeti is spacy, and the LSD trippers and recreational chemical enthusiasts who came to watch it were definitely spacy.

2001 began life as the short story The Sentinel, written by Arthur C. Clarke in 1950.
Clarke later wrote a novel based on the screenplay for 2001, which was released in July 1968, three months after the film’s debut.
Although released in Cinerama, 2001 was not shot with three cameras but with one camera on 70mm film with a special anamorphic lens to widen the image.

The scene where the shuttle craft is heading to the Moon with Floyd aboard shows the crew opening the dinner food with straws to suck the fluid into the mouth.
I believe in space where there is no gravity, that fluid shold have stayed even in the straw and not fall back...
Of corse there was gravity because there is gravity on earth and they did not do the thing with the plane falling fast toward the ground because that is very complicated and can only have about 30 seconds for each shot.

2001: A Space Odyssey is a countdown to tomorrow, a road map to human destiny, a quest for the infinite.
It is a dazzling, Academy Award winning visual achievement, a compelling drama of man vs. machine, a stunning meld of music and motion.
To begin his voyage into the future, Kubrick visits our prehistoric ape-ancestry past, then leaps millennia (via one of the most mind-blowing jump cuts ever conceived) into colonised space, and ultimately whisks astronaut Bowman (Keir Dullea) into uncharted realms of space, perhaps even into immortality.

 Kubrick's 2001 A Space Odyssey
According to Leonard F. Wheat, Stanley Kubrick's 1968 movie 2001: A Space Odyssey tells three hidden stories: Homer's The Odyssey; a spoofy tale based on science-fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke's idea of man-machine symbiosis; and Friedrich Nietzsche's Thus Spake Zarathustra (Also sprach Zarathustra, 1883-1891, 4 volumes).
In 2001, each monolith has four meanings - one for the surface story and one for each of the three allegories.
