Arizona Diamondbacks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On March 9, 1995, the city of Phoenix was awarded the Arizona Diamondbacks franchise for play beginning in the 1998 season, along with plans for a new retractable-roof ballpark, Bank One Ballpark (renamed in 2005 to Chase Field) to be built in an industrial/warehouse district on the southern edge of downtown Phoenix.
The name "Diamondbacks" was the winning choice in a name-the-team contest sponsored by Colangelo's group, which took out a full page ad promoting the contest in the sports section of the February 13, 1995 edition of the Arizona Republic.
By the 2004 season, however, the Diamondbacks had dropped to a dismal 51-111 record, the worst in Major League Baseball that year, despite Johnson pitching a perfect game on May 18 of that season.

Oswalt hasn't faced Arizona since July 5, 2001, when he allowed one run over eight innings to get a victory.
Pettitte never made excuses for his struggles in the 2001 World Series, but several members of that year's Diamondbacks team told him that he tipped his pitches.
"For me, there were a lot of positive things tonight," Pettitte said after throwing a season-high eight innings and holding Arizona to two runs on seven hits to go with two walks and seven strikeouts.

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Blake Stein is not Randy Johnson, but he did turn in his strongest start of the season as the Kansas City Royals rebounded from a loss with a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
It was just the fifth extra-base hit in the last 33 games for Dye, who led the Royals with 33 homers and had 41 doubles last season.
The Royals took a 1-0 lead -- that they never relinquished -- with one out in the second inning as Jermaine Dye sent Armando Reynoso's 0-1 pitch over the left-field fence for his eighth home run.

2001 World Series by Baseball Almanac
B aseball in 2001 will always be remembered not for the games that took place during the regular season, but for the patriotism and heroic tributes that took place in the wake of the 9/11 terrorists attacks.
As usual, the Yankees remained on top of the American League as baseball's most storied franchise prepared to face one of its newest as the National League's Arizona Diamondbacks had just won their first pennant in their fourth year of existence.
The attendance during Game 6 of the 2001 World Series was 49,707 — the largest of any game (including those in the regular season) ever played at Bank One Ballpark.

Amazon.com: 2001 World Series - Arizona Diamondbacks vs. New York Yankees: DVD: Arizona Diamondbacks,New York Yankees,MLB
In fact, the only team to have a more spectacular post-season run than the 2001 Yankees, was the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks, which dramatically won their first round series in the final at bat against St. Louis and blowing past perpetually contender Atlanta to reach the World Series.
Every World Series has its own distinct dramatic elements, but the Fall Classic in 2001 was inevitably marked by tragic events that took place away from the diamond.
It is a bit simplistic to note that this was a World Series in which the home team won all seven games, which is certainly interesting since it was not a World Series involving the Minnesota Twins.

That season, the Diamondbacks won 100 games and clinched the division with a week still left to play.
