The first Formula 1 Grand Prix in Japan was held at the Fuji Speedway in 1976.
In the 19 Japanese Grands Prix (1976-1977; 1987-2003) 11 have seen the title decided (1976, 1987-1991, 1996, 1998-2000, and 2003), with 5 (1976, 1996, 1998-1999 and 2003) being Championship deciders.
The 2004 season sees the Brazilian Grand Prix becoming the last race of the season in place of the traditional Japanese Grand Prix which is now the penultimate race.

At the most recent Japanese Grand Prix, on October 12, 2003, Michael Schumacher endured one of the most trying races in his illustious career but managed to secure the point he needed to take his sixth World Championship, beating the record held by Juan Manuel Fangio.

Juan Montoya appeared with the Williams PR staff at a downtown Indianapolis department store to sign autographs on the Wednesday before the race; Mika Häkkinen was in the same mall at the time and had to be shuffled to the back of a clothing store to escape a crowd of well-wishers.
Since the race was less than three weeks after the September 11, 2001 attacks, members of some teams took alternate air routes from Europe (through Philadelphia or Chicago), apparently for safety reasons.

A track side race marshal was killed when a wheel from a disintegrating racing car flew through a gap in the safety barriers and struck the man, aged in his 50s.
It was the first fatality at an Australian Formula 1 grand prix since the event began being held in Australia in 1985.
Australian Grand Prix Corporation chairman Ron Walker described the marshal's death as "one in a billion" accident.
