In special elections, a candidate must be a member of Knesset, amd may be proposed by a faction or factions of the Knesset, numbering no less than ten members.
On January 1, 2001, the Knesset voted 57-41 in favor of a motion to apply continuity to the bill to amend the law on the direct election of prime minister from the same point the previous Knesset left off.
The February 2001 election will be the first time that a separate special election will be held for prime minister, with the composition of the Knesset remaining unchanged.

As of 5th March 2004, CMEV has recorded 238 incidents of election related violence for the period since nominations were opened for the April 2004 general election on 17th February 2004.
Of the 29 complaints of incidents of election violence on 24th February 2004 - the closing day of nominations for the April 2004 general election - recorded by CMEV, the most serious is that which occurred in the Galle district.

Pakistan's military government has decided to hold general elections in the country a month ahead of the deadline given by the Supreme Court, well placed official sources told Gulf News yesterday.
Elections to the Senate can only be held after elections to the National Assembly and the four provincial assemblies have been held because these five assemblies form the electoral college for the Upper House of Pakistan's bicameral parliament.
The official said that before the general elections are held, the devolution of power to the lower levels would be completed, including transfer of power and resources from the federal to the provincial levels and from the provinces to the districts.

May 28 2001 (SLN) President Muhammad Ibrahim Egal of the self-declared state of Somaliland said that once the referendum to approved the new constitution is over, the administration will proceed with general elections.
In an interview published by IRIN on Monday, Egal said the holding of the general elections would "inaugurate the multiparty system".
Parties that qualified under these conditions would then stand in general elections for parliament "towards the end of 2001." Egal said presidential elections would be held in 2002.

Among other things, she said the body that was in charge of the balloting consciously and deliberately refused to permit citizens who were qualified and registered to vote although they had complied with all the legal requirements.
