NationMaster - Encyclopedia: American League Division Series
Jump to: navigation, search In baseball, the World Series is the championship series of Major League Baseball in the United States and Canada, played in October after the end of the regular season between the pennant winner of the American League and the pennant winner of the National League.
Major League Baseball is governed by the Major League Constitution, an agreement that has undergone several incarnations since 1920, with the most recent revisions being made in 2001.
However, if the wild-card team and the division leader with the best record are from the same division, the wild-card team plays the next winningest division leader, and the remaining two division leaders play.

American League Division Series - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Division Series was created after the 1993 season when Major League Baseball restructured each league into three divisions, but they were first played in 1995 due to the cancellation of the 1994 playoffs.
Typically, the wild-card team is assigned to play the division winner with the best winning percentage in one series, and the other two division winners play the other series.
However, if the wild-card team and the division winner with the best record are from the same division, the wild-card team plays the division winner with the second-best record, and the remaining two division winners play.

Twins-A's rivalry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Twins would be heckled intensely when they visited the Coliseum in Oakland, and the same would happen in reverse when the A's visited the Metrodome in Minneapolis.
This rivalry came from the two teams being among the premier teams in the American League's Western Division during those years.
However, it was rekindled in the 2002 American League Division Series, in which the Twins defeated the A's in front of packed houses in both stadiums, and has continued through 2006 as the two teams are among Major League Baseball's most successful in the first decade of the new century.

Division Series History by Baseball Almanac
Until 1969, when there were no divisions, the team finishing with the best record in each league won that league's pennant and faced the other league's pennant winner in the Fall Classic.
As a result, the winners in each division were now required to play each other in a best-of-five Championship Series to determine who would advance to represent their respective leagues in the coveted World Series.
In any event, the two series winners move on to the best-of-seven Championship Series to determine who will represent their league in the World Series.

Add in the Cubs' opportunity to gain confidence and solidify their momentum over the next couple of days against one of the few teams in either league demonstrably worst than they are, and any hot-streak's family tree pointing to a Saturday afternoon right-cross as its progenitor smacks of lazy, post hoc reasoning.
