It has to be said that it all works on the piano, but the impact of the music is materially changed by the sound of the harpsichord, and it is a pity it could not have been used here.
This is an excellent selection of modern recorder music, and it is particularly good to see Rubbra's three principal works for recorder and keyboard brought together, making this CD a must for Rubbra lovers at the very least.
Here in common with these composers he writes music which all amateur recorder players can attempt but which needs a virtuoso to present with the intonation and command of tone to give works such as the Rubbra their true stature.

All of the trad rockers were obsessed with keeping the music gritty and real -- to capture the vibe of the classic '60s records, they used vintage instruments and didn't deviate from classicist song structures.
More musically adept and experimental than Cast, Kula Shaker nevertheless worked the same vaguely spiritual lyrical territory, but musically they brought the overpowering rush of Oasis to psychedelia, a genre that the Mancunians had previously avoided.
The three British singles released from the album are definite highlights -- "Get Myself Arrested," "Whippin' Piccadilly," and "78 Stone Wobble," the latter containing a beautifully haunting acoustic guitar riff similar to Nirvana's unplugged version of the Meat Puppets' "Plateau." All the praise that Gomez's debut received is definitely not hype.
