Discovered February 11, 2003, by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research project's station at Socorro, New Mexico, 2003 CP (also written 2003 CP20), was the first asteroid known to have an orbit entirely within that of Earth.
2003 CP is a Venus-crosser asteroid, but does not get as close to the Sun as Mercury.

In 2003 an asteroid designated 2003 CP20, which has a diameter of no more than a few kilometres, was discovered to be orbiting the Sun entirely within the Earth’s orbit (astronomers believe that there may be many others lying in such an orbit).
However, 2003 CP20 is unlikely to threaten the Earth, but as a result of long-term planetary perturbations, the Atens and Apollos and about 50 per cent of the Amors are on orbits such that they could collide with the Earth, representing a possibly significant extraterrestrial hazard to life.
Apart from an Aten object designated 1995 CR, and 2003 CP20, the near-Earth asteroid whose orbit comes closest to the Sun is the Apollo asteroid Phaethon, about 5 km (3 mi) wide, whose perihelion distance is about 20.9 million km (13.9 million mi).

According to MPEC 2003-C63 2003 CP20, a NEA of about 2 km in size (H = 16.3) recently discovered by LINEAR, shows a nominal orbit completely inside that of the Earth: it would be the first known object of this kind.
2003 CP20, currently a very easy target to observe for northern astronomers at V = 17.0-17.5 in the morning sky is going to be observable for a few months due to the geometry of the apparition and its future brightness.
2003 CN17, currently between 19.0 and 19.5 V is going to fade rather slowly during the next few weeks but its solar elongation will decrease consistently while being located in the southern polar region of the sky.

The image of a Near-Earth asteroid 2003 CP20 was taken on 2003 February 14.0 UT with 0.57-m f/5.2 reflector + CCD camera SBIG ST-8 of the Klet' Observatory and is 30 seconds exposure.
Minor planet 2003 CP20 is the first asteroid with a confirmed aphelion distance of less than less than the earth's perihelion distance of 0.983 AU.
The object was discovered near its maximum possible elongation from the sun of 76 deg.

2003 BD44's potential hazard assessments were updated 5 Feb. on both the NEODyS and JPL risk monitoring sites following new observations reported on the 5th from Great Shefford and Mallorca observatories on the 4th and 5th.
The stars are long trails, and 2003 CP20 is the round speck of light at the center.
Fortunately, CP20 is currently "a very easy target to observe for northern astronomers," and will be so "for a few months." The campaign was retired ten days later, with the orbit still calculated to be inside that of Earth.

Asteroid 2003 CP20 was discovered on February 11 with the 1-meter LINEAR telescope in New Mexico.
According to the Minor Planet Electronic Circular issued last Thursday to announce the asteroid's discovery, 2003 CP20 is 0.978 AU from the sun at aphelion.
And thanks to its orbit, which is inclined 25 degrees from the ecliptic, 2003 CP20 doesn't come within 0.19 AU (more than 18 million miles or 28 million kilometers) from our planet.

As of May 2004 there are only two known Apoheles: 2003 CP and 2004 JG Mercury-crosser asteroids having a perihelion smaller than Mercury's 0.3075 AU.
(136108) 2003 EL (with two satellites) and (136472) 2005 FY are among the brightest.
Additional groups exist for other orbital resonances with Neptune than the 2:3 resonance of the Plutinos and the 1:1 resonance of the Neptune Trojans (such as 2001 QR), but they have not yet been officially named.
