 Volvo S60 R - Features - European Car Magazine
To determine european car's choice for our 2003 Grand Prix award to the year's most significant European-bred automobile, we gathered together a group of writers, art directors and even an advertising manager.
As announced in the August issue of european car, the panel's choice to receive the 2003 Grand Prix was Volvo's S60 R, an exciting new variant of the Swedish firm's much admired S60 sedan.
It was surprising, given the quality of the competition, how quickly the panel agreed on the S60 R as a deserving winner of the 2003 european car Grand Prix--though the speed of the decision did not reflect how difficult it was to find a champion among all these winners.

With 300 bhp, standard all-wheel drive and six-speed gearbox, the S60R is a kick in the pants to drive and by far the most fun I've ever had behind the wheel of a Volvo.
It was surprising, given the quality of the competition, how quickly the panel agreed on the S60 R as a deserving winner of the 2003 european car Grand Prix—though the speed of the decision did not reflect how difficult it was to find a champion among all these winners.
Fortunately for the kind of drivers who read european car, there is a group of driving enthusiasts within the organization which pushed for a range of cars that would demonstrate all that Volvo knew how to do, in a way that would capture the interest of the marketplace from an entirely new direction.

Nick Heidfeld winning pole position for today's European Grand Prix was as unexpected as the tropical conditions that visited this corner of the Eifel Mountains.
Heidfeld is alone in loving the track, probably because he frequently travelled from nearby Mönchengladbach, learned to ride a bike on the mountain paths and went karting as a start to his motor racing career.
The result has been made even sweeter for BMW since Heidfeld beat the Mercedes-powered McLaren of Kimi Raikkonen by 0.116sec and Mark Webber was third fastest to give Williams two cars in the top three, a suitable follow-up to having Heidfeld and Webber on the podium at Monaco, alongside the victorious Raikkonen.

NURBURGRING, GERMANY, June 29, 2003 — The European Minardi Cosworth team was satisfied that its cars finished today’s Grand Prix of Europe at the Nurburgring, but disappointed that both machines struggled for grip throughout the race, thus preventing drivers Justin Wilson and Jos Verstappen from displaying their true potential.
Wilson’s car suffered a broken exhaust before the halfway point of the race, but the British driver continued to press on, while Verstappen found himself having to cope with a severe handling imbalance, which ultimately forced him to focus solely on getting his car to the chequered flag.
The team will now be hoping for a better performance at next weekend’s French Grand Prix.
