January 18, 2003 - MLS player drafts were all over the place during the league's halcyon days of the mid-1990s because, well, the league was looking for players all over the place.
There was the MLS draft, in which post-collegiate players in the A-League, in national-team programs, indoor soccer or in leagues overseas were selected.
MLS continued with the three-draft system until the 2000 season, when the idea of combining the three drafts into one all-encompassing draft was hatched.

Since players sign their contracts with MLS first before the draft, they may often stipulate that the signing is dependent on that player playing for a specific team.
MLS could tell them to get lost, but the fear would be that they may very well do just that.
MLS has to compete with other entities for the services of these kids, and playing at home is one of the few weapons MLS has in it's arsenal to compete for their signatures.

The MLS SuperDraft is an annual event in which the Major League Soccer teams select players who have graduated from college or otherwise been signed by the league.
The SuperDraft was first instituted in 2000, as a combination of the MLS College Draft, in which players having graduated college were selected, and the MLS Supplemental Draft, in which all other players were chosen.
The draft is divided into six rounds of ten picks, the order of which is determined by a combination of the teams' playoff and regular season positions.

The Washington Post is reporting today that MLS and Don Garber have agreed in principle to a long-term extension of his term as league commissioner.
Seems that MLS officials wanted the field to get in better condition after the delay that puddled much of the field, and they wanted to provide entertainment they promised, so the players were quickly ushered back into the locker room after being back on the field for mere minutes.
Someone who made solid strides in MLS but didn't always show it in the World Cup, Clint Mathis, is on the shelf for a few weeks now with a right knee injury, specifically, a torn meniscus and a grade one sprain of the medial collateral ligament.

The Rapids were without a pick until the third round, when they made a trade with the Columbus Crew to acquire the 27th overall selection in exchange for Colorado's third round pick in 2004 and their sixth round pick in the 2003 draft.
Colorado's final pick in the 2003 SuperDraft, the 48th overall selection, was used to acquire another forward, 21-year-old Casey Schmidt from Boston College.
