Conservative Party of Canada - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Conservative Party of Canada (French: Parti conservateur du Canada) is a right-of-centre political party in Canada, formed by the merger of the Canadian Alliance and the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada in December 2003.
The party is still referred to as "Tory" by the media and retains the tie to the historical Conservative Party of Canada founded in 1854 by Sir John A. Macdonald and Sir George-Étienne Cartier by virtue of the fact that the merged entity assumed all assets and liabilities of the Progressive Conservative Party.

Following the resignation of PC party leader Robert Stanfield, Clark sought and won the leadership of the PC Party at the 1976 leadership convention.
He retired from politics in 1993, side-stepping the near annihilation of the PC party in the 1993 election under the leadership of Mulroney's successor Kim Campbell.
Many of his supporters and detractors have suggested his actions shored up the weakened PC party during some of its toughest years when its national alternative status was seriously challenged by the prairie populism of Preston Manning and the Reform Party of Canada and the social conservatism of Stockwell Day and the Canadian Alliance.

David Orchard: The 2003 PC Leadership Race
His was the party of Robert Stanfield and Joe Clark; it created what became the CBC in the 1930s and beat back free trade in 1911 -- though he also worked in Brian Mulroney's free-trade government of the 1980s.

Conservatism in Canada has in fact deteriorated to the point that if conservatives are honest with themselves, they will be able to find Liberals who are more conservative both "socially" and "economically" than many in their own so-called conservative parties.
Late term and partial birth abortions, more hate law legislation heading in the definitive direction of censorship of ancient religious scriptures, child porn laws favouring the perpetrator rather than the victim, and decriminalizing marijuana are also all bad Liberal policies that have social and economic implications that Canadians don't need complicating their lives.
The PC Party remains very proud of its progressively liberal stance on most policy, and it is difficult to imagine that ever changing.

There was even blood on the floor after the 2003 PC convention in Toronto, when Peter MacKay won the leadership based on a deal he made behind closed doors with rival candidate David Orchard: a deal to review the effects of the free trade deal and to never make a merger with the Alliance.
It was really the old Canadian Alliance party that perfected this technique: they chose leaders in 2000 and again in 2002 in what amounted to one big primary, and they would hold big election-day convention events to announce the result.
