Kim became # 2 when the final rankings for the 2003 season came out on Tuesday, and she will keep that rank until next year, but winning her 2nd straight WTA Championship and a $1,000,030 prize is some consolation (the extra $30 represents the WTA's 30th anniversary).
It was the last WTA match of 2003 (of course, the Fed Cup SFs and Finals are not until Nov 19-23).
The WTA Championships, with only 8 players, had all matches scheduled in the evening, with 2 groups (Red & Black) in a round-robin format (12 matches), with two winners from each group becoming semifinalists to play off on Nov 9th, with the Final on Monday, Nov 10th.

From 1984-1998, the final of the championships was a best-of-five-set match – making it the only tournament on the women's tour to have a best-of-five-set match at any round of the competition.
The WTA Tour Championships are generally considered to be the fifth most prestigious event on the women's tour after the four Grand Slam tournaments.
