Kangwon provincial government announced Wednesday that it had submitted an application to host the 2010 Winter Olympics to the Korean Olympic Committee, following its successful hosting of the 1999 Winter Asian Games at Yongpyong.

Supporters also point to the successful hosting of the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics, the co-hosting of soccer's 2002 World Cup and the staging of the Asian Games, also in 2002.
The July vote could be influenced by Turin, a European city, hosting the 2006 Winter Games and Beijing being the 2008 Summer Games host.
