 UW-Colleges 2003 Archaeology Field School
Most field archaeological field technicians working in the Midwest spend a significant portion of their field work conducting shovel testing as most Cultural Resource Management archaeology projects are focused on the identification and location of archaeological sites in areas that are going to be developed.
Because of the recent Old Copper artifact discovery and the recommendations of the previous archaeological survey, Tom Pleger was hired by the City of Marinette to monitor the excavations for the construction of the gazebo foundation.
In March of 2003 while there was still snow and ice in the area, Pleger spent the day closely monitoring the removal of soils for the foundation.

The burials from the excavations prior to 2003 represent a mix of ages and both sexes, with 4 adult females, 8 adult males, two adults of unknown sex and 7 juveniles including an infant less than 6 months of age.
Despite inclement weather and ill health, the opening morning of the 18th of July was a delightful occasion, and the room was well received both at the time and from subsequent visitors.
This is the second year the BRP has collaborated with the YAC and we will continue to promote archaeology to younger people with new competitions next year.

A lecture on Mississippi Archaeology and an artifact identification session will be presented by USM archaeologist Ed Jackson in the small auditorium of the Holmes Student Union at Southwest Mississippi Community College.
Archaeology of the Holy Lands, a lecture by MDAH historical archaeologist Jack Elliott, will be presented for the Gulf Coast chapter of the Mississippi Archaeological Association at the Maritime & Seafood Museum.

We were visited today by a group of scouts led by archaeologists from the Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology in Indianapolis.
Although several possible features were present in the trenches opened up on site 12-H-1052 (outside the enclosure), it was clear that the area had not been heavily used by the inhabitants of the enclosure.
In consultation with the Hamilton County Parks and Recreation Department and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology, excavations were moved back to the interior of the enclosure.

 Protecting Iraq's Ancient Heritage
As Baghdad was falling to coalition forces in April 2003, the international media reported that the Iraq Museum had been ransacked and more than 170,000 of the finest antiquities from the very cradle of civilization had been stolen while U.S. forces stood idle.
McGuire Gibson, an authority on Mesopotamian archaeology at the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, talked to ARCHAEOLOGY in early May about his work in Iraq, the sacking of the Baghdad museum, and the global importance of the region's cultural history.
The AIA, together with the Society for American Archaeology, has taken the lead in promoting the passage of new legislation, the Iraq Cultural Heritage Protection Act, prohibiting the importation into the United States of all archaeological and cultural materials that have left Iraq since August 1990.

In September 2003, Indiana University will return to the Hovey Lake archaeological site, near Mt. Vernon in Posey County, Indiana, to continue a multi-year program of research and public education, thanks to the support of a Transportation Enhancement grant and matching-fund contributions.

Doctoral students entering the program with a master's degree from another university are required to pass the comprehensive core examination and to demonstrate the ability to read at least one foreign language relevant to the area of interest and approved by the student's adviser.
The foreign language requirement must be completed by the end of the sixth quarter in residence, unless an earlier deadline is imposed by the adviser.
The comprehensive examinations are graded by a committee consisting of the chair of the program, the professor in charge of the course, and a third faculty member.

The archaeological research conducted for the Rio Nuevo Archaeology project had several goals, including the mitigation of archaeological resources in areas where development was to occur.
For the Rio Nuevo Archaeology project, 56 sherds from the Clearwater site, AZ BB:13:6 (ASM), and the Tucson Presidio, AZ BB:13:13 (ASM), were selected for petrographic analysis to establish their provenance and to verify the temper characterizations provided by ceramicist James M. Heidke.
Desert Archaeology, Inc., used volunteers on several excavations, had guides to provide tours of the digs, and large open houses at the end of each project.

Arkansas Archeology Month 2003 was moved to the spring of the year and is now celebrated in March.
The theme for 2003 was Archaeology and the Louisiana Purchase, tying in with Arkansas's celebration of the bicentennial event in which President Thomas Jefferson purchased the vast territory of Louisiana from France doubling the size of the United States.
Programs for Archeology Month 2003 included demonstrations, exhibits, workshops, slide shows, and open houses, and were sponsored by museums, libraries, state parks, archeological offices, and various chapters of the Arkansas Archeological Society.
