 2004 FU162
2004 FU is a meteoroid which passed within about one Earth radius of the surface of the Earth at 15:35 UTC on March 31 2004, or 2.02 Earth radii from the centre of the Earth.
The discovery was not announced until August 22 2004.
By comparison, geostationary satellites orbit at 5.6 Earth radii and GPS satellites orbit at 3.17 Earth radii from the centre of the Earth.

 Asteroid Shaves Past Earth's Atmosphere
2004 FU162 was deflected by about 20 degrees because of the Earth's gravity.
The previous record for the closest asteroid approach to Earth was set on 18 March by an object called 2004 FH which missed the Earth by about 40,000 kilometres.
The smaller 2004 FU162 would have burned up as a fireball ending with a smaller explosion, had it ventured into the Earth's atmosphere.

News Article: Closest Asteroid 2004 FU162   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-21)
New orbital calculations indicate that the NEA called 2004 FU162 came the closest of any asteroid discovered by the Spaceguard Survey.
From its brightness, this asteroid appears to be less than 10 m across, so that it would have exploded harmlessly in the upper atmosphere had it hit (to reach the surface, it would have required a diameter of about 100 m).
FU162 was discovered on March 31, just hours before its closest approach, by the LINEAR survey system in New Mexico, which tracked it over a 44-minute period.

While it was pretty small at only 5 meters, and would probably have entirely burned up in the atmosphere depending on the composition, 2004 YD5 passed below geostationary orbit and was the second closest asteroid approach ever observed.
The closest involved 2004 FU162 that flew by last March which we didn't even spot until August.
2004 YD5 was discovered on December 21st by Stan Pope of the FMO project, but it was later calculated that closest approach had been two days earlier on December the 19th.

The Space Review: 2004 VD17, impact assessment scales, and a natural impact warning clearinghouse
I have suggested on several occasions during the past two and a half years that a better—and more understandable—assessment of potential NEO hazards is provided by the ratio of the time interval spanned by the observations to the time remaining until the first possible impact date.
For 2004 VD17 and the 2102 date, this “Purgatorio Ratio” (PR) is 0.014, increasing to 0.042 if one accepts the 2002 precovery observations and the 2102 threat continues to be valid.
On the other hand, we do know for sure that 2004 VD17 will be within a million or two kilometers of the Earth on 2102 May 4, and that makes for a different situation.

Asteroid 2004 FH, about 30 metres (100 feet) in diameter, passed approximately 43,000 kilometres (26,500 miles) above the Earth's surface (one-tenth of the distance to the Moon).
While the time from detection to nearest approach may seem short, Asteroid 2004 FH is extremely small.
Only two weeks later on March 31, 2004, meteoroid 2004 FU162 set a new record for closest recorded approach, passing Earth only 6,500 km (4,000 miles) away (nearly one-sixtieth of the distance to the Moon).

Closest observed flyby: At the beginning of this report above, it is stated that the 2004 FU162 passage, at some 8,000 miles above Earth's surface, “is by far the closest ever observed astrometrically.” The distinction is important, because the title of “closest ever observed” probably belongs to the well documented Great Daylight Fireball of 1972.

Now designated 2004 FU, the object was spotted only hours before its close brush by the LINEAR survey telescope in New Mexico.
Despite these all-too-brief observations, dynamist Steven Chesley (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) managed to derive a reliable orbit — and the near miss — that was reported August 22nd by the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
With an estimated diameter of less than 10 meters, 2004 FU is small enough that it would have exploded harmlessly had it collided with Earth's atmosphere.

Sunday's discovery MPEC 2004-Q22 states that 2004 FU162's “orbit is quite determinate and, given the exceptional nature of this close approach, the object is now receiving a designation.” There is a little more to the story than that.
The most important new news today was that JPL this morning had posted 2004 FU162 with many low-rated “impact” (atmospheric event) solutions, the first of which comes almost exactly two years after its discovery (details below).
