At demonstrations in Miami organized to protest the Free Trade Area of the Americas, protesters were prevented from joining permitted marches, jailed and attacked with violent force.
According to the lawsuit, protesters in cities across the United States are being forced to assemble in "protest zones" blocks away from where the president or vice president was speaking (and blocks away from the media), while supporters of the administration's policy are allowed to hold their signs up in front of the building.

When it was announced a year ago that President Bush would be hosting the 2004 G8 Summit on Sea Island (Sea Island as in cotton, as in slaves), the upscale resort where George Bush Snr and Barbara spent their honeymoon, there was a surge of civic pride in this sleepy corner of coastal Georgia.
In a flurry of public officiousness, 17 Czech house framers whose visas had expired were taken off the island in handcuffs and deported; the fact that they had been working here a year before the location of the summit was announced did little to mute the trumpeting of this national security coup.
A State of Emergency granting extra powers to local law enforcement was announced by the State Governor on 7 May, and while nowhere has yet been "set aside" for the protesters to protest (a quaint notion in itself), a playing-field over on the mainland has been fenced for use as a detention centre.

Organizers argued that such crackdowns on G8 activism were part of the same police model used at the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) protest in Miami, Florida in November 2003.
Though the G8 activist events were somewhat overshadowed by the enormous police presence and small protester turnout, they were successful in promoting alternative visions of a more equitable and peaceful world.

May 27, 2004 – In anticipation of protests at the G8 Summit in Georgia next month, Governor Sonny Perdue has declared a pre-emptive state of emergency while local authorities have granted police the right to close down demonstrations.
The City Council of Brunswick followed the declaration by changing its laws last week so that police can halt protests if a "state of emergency or disaster is lawfully declared." The state of emergency order covers six counties and will be in effect between May 31 and June 20.
Protest organizers and civil libertarians are outraged and are accusing the governor and Brunswick officials of unlawfully trying to stifle dissent.
