The 10th IAAF World Indoor Championships in Athletics under the auspices of the International Association of Athletics Federations were held in the Budapest Arena, Hungary between March 5 and March 7, 2004.
It was the second visit of the championships to Budapest having previously visited there 15 years earlier in 1989.
This was a repeat of the events following the 1999 Indoor Championship when she had also taken the gold only for it to be taken away when she was given a two year ban for the same offence.

The World Indoor Games were first held in 1985 and renamed the World Indoor Championships in 1987.
In February 2002 the Hungarian Local Organising Committee, set up specifically for the Athletics World Championship, submitted its proposal to the IAAF and set the first weekend of March (5-7) as the date for the Championships, which was duly accepted.
Mainly because the arena is new, as part of its preparations, the hosts intend to hold two trial athletics meetings in spring 2003 and another two immediately prior to the big event in order to ensure all aspects of the new venue have been thoroughly tested.

Pavlysh was stripped of her 1999 IAAF World Indoor Championships gold medal after she had tested positive for anabolic steroid Stanozolol at the event in Maebashi, Japan.
5 years on at the 2004 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Budapest, Hungary she won the title again only to fail the drug test for the same reason.
She was again stripped of her title and banned from athletics for life.

The USATF National Masters Indoor Championships will be conducted here for the eighth year in a row with nearly 200 world and US masters records recorded here at "Reggie".
The "crowning jewel" for the facility, though, is the arrival of the USA National Indoor Championships for a two year stay in 2003 and 2004.
