In the Indian Ocean and western Pacific (north and south of the equator), tropical cyclogenesis is strongly influenced by the seasonal movement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, rather than by easterly waves.
In the Northwestern Pacific, tropical cyclones with sustained winds of less than 63 kilometres per hour (39 mph) are referred to as tropical depressions, as in the North Atlantic, Northeastern Pacific and Central Pacific, though measurements are made using 10-minute averages for sustained winds.
Hurricane Mitch during the 1998 Atlantic hurricane season caused severe flooding and mudslides in Honduras, killing about 18,000 people and changing the landscape enough that entirely new maps of the country were needed.

This site is the typhoon database of 140,000 typhoon images for the past 25 years, searchable by date, name, location, cloud patterns and many others.
In the scientific communities such as earth science, bioinformatics, physics, the explosive amount of data stream that sensors generate continuously urges us to develop a set of techniques to discover relevant information that is hidden in the middle of the data in near real-time.
The project "Digital Typhoon" constructs the large collection of typhoon images as a typical example of spatio-temporal scientific database, and aims at developing techniques to "mine" or discover relevant knowledge which may be useful for typhoon analysis and prediction.

As many as twelve Atlantic hurricanes can develop over a season, with an average of six Atlantic hurricanes per season, but few make landfall.
The general name for these storms is "tropical cyclones." When they are weak, they are called tropical storms; when stronger they have different names according to the region where they exist: hurricanes (North Atlantic and Eastern North Pacific), typhoons (Western North Pacific), cyclones (other regions).
Tropical cyclones in these areas are mainly generated during the late summer and fall season, roughly June to November in the Northern Hemisphere and December to March in the Southern Hemisphere.
