  Liberation Themes in Country Music
Country music must be understood in light of the historical and cultural context in which it occurred.
Country music is more this-worldly and speaks in terms of survival and even victory in the midst of hard times and failure in life, often with the help of booze and a lover.
Country music reflects the fact that country and working people in the South were fiercely individualistic and yet lived in deep union with family, clan, community, and nation.

At a time when country music, as so often, was flirting with pop, Turner took a leaf from his main immediate influence, Randy Travis, and established a sort of neo-neo-traditionalist approach with his first significant hit, "Long Black Train," in 2003-2004.
Urban, an expatriate New Zealander, is anything but a Nashville purist; in fact, his music is only nominally definable as country, due to the frequent inclusion of a Dobro, banjo, or mandolin in his arrangements and the slight country twang in his singing voice, acquired from years of listening to country music as a child.
More success, Reba McEntire declared herself part of the new traditionalist movement in country music, claiming that the pop-oriented recordings she had made in the '70s and early '80s did not reflect her real taste and that, as an album title put it, My Kind of Country was the sound of steel guitars and fiddles.
