The stoppage is the first for a North American major sports league since the 1998-99 NBA lockout canceled 464 games, cutting each club's regular-season schedule from 82 games to 50.
It is the third stoppage for the NHL following a 10-day strike in 1992 that caused the postponement of 30 games and a 103-day lockout in 1994-95 that eliminated 468 games, cutting each team's regular-season schedule from 84 games to 48.
Bettman said the season can't extend past June, and the lockout threatens to wipe out the Stanley Cup final for the first time since 1919, when the series between Montreal and Seattle was stopped after five games due to a flu epidemic.

In 2004 he won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, beating out two-time champion Jason Richardson.

The 2005 NBA Finals was the championship round of the 2004-05 National Basketball Association season.

Only two teams in NBA Finals history have ever came back from a 2-0 deficit: the Celtics in the famed 1969 Finals and the Trail Blazers in a more obscure Finals in 1977.

Got a basketball jones? NBA TV is the network for you
Now available in 66 million homes (though only about 10 million actually have it) and seen in 40 countries after a recent agreement with Hong Kong, NBA TV will air 96 regular-season games in 2004-05 and select games in the first round of the playoffs.
As NBA TV approaches its fifth anniversary, and its second full season of televising games, the league finds itself in the interesting position of building up its own network and drawing viewers to the channel while still offering it as a supplement to its broadcast partners at ABC, ESPN and Turner Sports.
For the league's broadcast partners, despite the down-the-road possibility of the NBA moving more games to NBA TV, the network seems to be a good partner.
