Leicester Tigers claimed the 24th and final place in the 2003 / 2004 Heineken Cup tournament when they beat Saracens 27-20 in extra time of a dramatic Zurich Wildcard match at Franklin’s Gardens last Saturday (31 May).
The 2001 and 2002 Heineken Cup winners had to dig deep before a try by flanker Neil Back edged it for the Tigers with extra time fast running out while London Wasps will be the England No 1 seeds after beating Gloucester 39-3 in the Zurich Premiership final at Twickenham later the same day.

He rocketed to prominence in 2002-2003 as a prime force in the team that won the Zurich Premiership, he repeated this for 2003-2004 when the club reached the finals of both the Heineken Cup and the end-of-season Zurich Premiership playoffs.
England went on to win the World Cup and with his team-mates Abbott was awarded the MBE in the 2004 New Year's honours.
During the 1999 World Cup, Abbott signed for English club Leicester Tigers, who had lost several players to international duty, and made two appearances, on the recommendation of former Tigers and Springbok fly-half Joel Stransky.

Also when the tough Heineken Cup schedule during December and January for Wasps is taken into account - it would not be a major surprise if the Londoners were understrength for the likely trip to Newcastle.
There is also the small matter of the Falcons avenging their narrow loss in the 6th round of the Cup last season to the Irish.
While any thoughts of winning the league title may have faded away, lifting the Powergen Cup still remains a distinct possibility - especially after the quarter and semi final draw (see below) handed the Falcons home advantage for both ties.
